A sump pit depressurization (SPD) system reduces radon by pulling soil gas from beneath the home through the sump pit and venting it safely outside, before it can enter your living space.

  • Vent pipe routing: The system pipe comes up from the sump pit and exits the house either through the sill plate or through a cored hole in the concrete foundation.
  • Sealed penetrations: Every spot where the pipe passes through a wall or foundation is sealed with caulking.
  • Radon fan: Mounted on the exterior portion of the pipe, the fan continuously draws radon-laden soil gas up and out of the sump pit.
  • Hydro loop: Installed immediately after the fan, the water trap separates out any water that travels up the vent line.
  • Open, screened vent top: The top of the vent pipe is left open to meet code, but it’s fitted with a screen that keeps birds, bugs, and debris out.
  • Interior tie-in: Inside the basement, the pipe comes down through the sill plate and connects directly into the home’s sump pit.
  • Sealed, clear sump lid: The sump pit is capped with a clear plexiglass lid, sealed to the basin.
  • System monitor (U-tube gauge): Mounted on the vertical pipe, this shows how much air is moving through the system at a glance.
  • Alarm notification: An audible alarm sounds if system pressure drops or spikes outside the normal range.

Frequently Asked Questions about sump pump depressurization

The sump pit is already connected to your home’s perimeter drain tile, so tying in there lets the fan draw soil gas from all the way around the foundation – not just one location. That’s what makes it effective at reducing radon throughout the whole house.

It’s a small water trap installed right after the fan. Since the vent pipe is open at the top to meet code, occasional water (rain, condensation) can enter – the hydro loop separates that water out before it can reach and damage the fan.

Code requires the vent to be open at the top. A screen is installed to block birds, bugs, and debris while still allowing the required airflow.

Check the system monitor gauge. If both sides read zero, the system has stopped running. If the reading maxes out (at the fan’s rated pressure, e.g. “2”), the pipe is likely clogged or full of water. Either reading means it’s time to call us.
